Australia currently leads the 5-match series 1-0, securing a narrow victory in the 1st ODI. In that thrilling encounter, AUS emerged victorious by a slim margin of three wickets.
In the 1st ODI, South Africa opted to bat first. The opener, Quinton de Kock, was dismissed early for 11 runs by Marcus Stoinis. A partnership between Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma saw them add 37 runs before wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Bavuma played a standout innings, scoring an impressive 114 runs off 142 balls, contributing significantly to SA’s total of 222 runs. Josh Hazlewood led AUS’s bowling attack, claiming three crucial wickets, while the other bowlers each chipped in with a wicket.
Australia’s response saw an early setback as opener David Warner was dismissed for a duck by Marco Jansen. AUS continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, but a crucial 7th-wicket partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and Ashton Agar, worth 109 runs, turned the tide. Labuschagne’s composed innings proved pivotal in steering Australia to victory in just 40 overs. Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee were the pick of the bowlers for SA, each claiming two wickets.
